My Journey

tUpon graduating from the University of Florida and getting married, I began to research the process involved in having a baby. As I read, my first feelings were of dread. Each step seemed mentally and physically uncomfortable to me. Each moment seemed dictated and applied to the birthing mother. I kept thinking, "Is all of this really necessary?"

At our childbirth class, my husband and I were lucky to have a seasoned midwife, Nicole Lavallee of Coastal Birth Services as a guest speaker. Her no-nonsense, non-fearful responses to our many questions were an inspiration to me. This woman trusted birth. But, she also had strict guidelines for setting a woman up for success and minimizing the chance that medical intervention was necessary. Far from cross-your-fingers-and-hope-for-the-best, it was about educating yourself, eating well, exercising, and taking control of your pregnancy and birth to the greatest extent possible. It was mind-shifting. I was filled with peace and empowerment that I still feel today throughout my ongoing birth education.

My Own Births

I birthed my first 9.5 lb son at our Myrtle Beach home with the assistance of the highly skilled Nicole Lavallee. He emerged with his fist against his face and the umbilical cord wrapped around his waist. Nicole expertly assisted him. I didn’t tear. I felt strong, and it was due to my choices during pregnancy and my carefully selected care provider. After that, I knew I wanted to help other women educate themselves about the birthing process and assist them in evaluating and conquering their own fears.

My second son was over 10 lbs and born in the water with shoulder dystocia (stuck shoulder). Again, Nicole swiftly released his shoulder, and he was born in perfect shape. I continue to believe that my choice of care provider and waterbirth allowed me the maximum mobility necessary to facilitate his safe exit.

I believe that my births are excellent examples of complications that can occur and the simple methods that facilitate our goals of healthy mom and baby. I want to reduce the fear surrounding childbirth. The choices that can lead you to a satisfying birth experience center around your care provider, childbirth educator, birthing location and team.

No matter the path, I want to help women demystify this experience
and feel the unrivaled feminine empowerment they deserve.
