Amanda Hynes, CD(DONA), LCCE
Hynes Childbirth Services provides certified Lamaze Childbirth Education classes and DONA International certified childbirth doula services to the Myrtle Beach area. I am proud to be able to share the evidenced-based information of Lamaze International with the expecting families of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and surrounding Grand Strand area.
In 2008, I began a blog to share the information that was both inspiring me and driving me crazy, with hopes that it might help families with their own birth decisions. Click the button to the right. It will be updated regularly with current evidence regarding birthing practices and information about our local events.
If you are interested in doula services or attending a childbirth class, please click the button to the right or drop me an email at CarrelHynes@yahoo.com. A quick survey of your birthing goals, options, and fears will give us both a great preliminary outline prior to our first in person meeting.
Upon graduating from the University of Florida and getting married, I began to seriously research the process involved in having a baby. As I read, my first feelings were that of dread. Each step seemed mentally and physically uncomfortable to me. Each moment seemed dictated and applied to the birthing mother. I kept thinking, "Is all of this really necessary?"
At our childbirth class, my husband and I were lucky to have a seasoned midwife, Nicole Lavallee of Coastal Birth Services as a guest speaker. Her no-nonsense, non-fearful responses to each birth question were an inspiration to me. This woman trusted birth. But, she also had strict guidelines for setting a woman up for success and minimizing the chance that medical intervention was necessary. Far from cross-your-fingers-and-hope-for-the-best, it was about educating yourself, eating well, exercising, and taking control of your pregnancy, options, and your birth destiny (to the greatest extent possible). It was mind-shifting. I was filled with a peaceful empowerment that I still feel today throughout my ongoing birth education.
My Own Births
I birthed my first 9.5 lb son at our Myrtle Beach home with the assistance of the highly skilled Nicole Lavallee. He emerged with his fist against his face and the umbilical cord wrapped like a seatbelt around his waist. Nicole expertly assisted him. I didn’t tear. I felt whole and strong, and it was due to my choices during pregnancy and my carefully selected care provider. After that, I knew I wanted to help other women educate themselves about the birthing process and assist them in addressing and conquering their own fears.
My second son was over 10 lbs and born in the water with shoulder dystocia (stuck shoulder). Again, Nicole swiftly released his shoulder, and he was born unfazed. I continue to believe that my choice of care provider and waterbirth allowed me the maximum mobility necessary to facilitate his safe exit.
I believe that my births are excellent examples of complications that can occur and the simple approaches that facilitate our ultimate goals of healthy mom and baby. I want to reduce the fear surrounding childbirth. The choices that can lead you to a satisfying birth experience center around your care provider, childbirth educator, birthing location and team.
No matter the path, I want to help women demystify this experience and feel the unrivaled feminine empowerment they deserve.
